Selling Your House? The Myth of the St. Joseph Statue

When selling a house, sometimes things don’t go quite as planned and the house doesn’t sell.  Some home sellers consider the myth of the St. Joseph statue a viable alternative to improving their value proposition to buyers.

In fact, there are entire websites devoted to this selling strategy and you can purchase a “St. Joseph Home Selling Kit” online.  One site claims over 2 million people have followed this plan for selling.

St. Joseph statue

Who is St. Joseph?  To quote one site, “Saint Joseph was Jesus earthly father, and raised Gods only son together with his wife, Virgin Mary. St Joseph is known to be the saint of handcraft and home protection. He is also commonly referred to as “The home Selling saint” in folklore”.

Now, of course I have heard about this since I have worked in real estate for 13 years so I drilled down a little and discovered simple yet clear instructions about what to do when burying your statue.

Here are the burying instructions I found on one website.

Burying Instructions

Always bury the statue upside down. The theory behind this request claims that Joseph will work harder to leave the ground when buried upside down so he can find a comfortable home in which to dwell.

Some say that burying the statue sideways so that Joseph’s praying hands are pointing directly at your house helps direct potential buyers to your home.

Bury a St Joseph statue in the backyard of your home near a flowerbed, shrub or other natural growth to expedite selling your home.

You can also choose to bury St. Joseph one feet underground (again, to make Joseph work harder to leave the ground and quickly find a nice home) next to your For Sale sign, even if it is in the front yard.

Once your house is sold, dig up the St Joseph statue and give it a place of honor in your new home.

I would suggest that you find a good, professional real estate agent and follow their guidance as opposed to burying a statue. Remember:  Hope is not an effective selling strategy.
